A Fond Farewell - Success

A Fond Farewell...

All Good Things Must Come To An End

The past two years have taught us that we need to see the theatre world through an entirely new lens. A lens that encourages opportunities for representation, scholarship, collaboration and a hand-up for the individuals and theatres that have been under-represented. So, the SARTA board of directors has decided to redirect its energy to creating new programs to reach an ever-expanding community of theatre artists.

While we are excited to be offering new opportunities, the board feels that it is also time to say goodbye to the Elly Awards. The Ellys had a great 38-year run from 1984 – 2020. SARTA took ownership of the awards in 1986 and has given out at least 1000 plaques over the decades. However, the times dictate that equity, diversity and inclusion are more important than awards. And until such time when all peoples are represented on the stage, our efforts are better spent on opportunities for everyone to share their unique stories.

SARTA will continue to announce Lifetime Achievement Awards on an annual basis. As a matter of fact, in late December 2021, we gave a posthumous award to James C. Glika-Hernandez at ‘A Concert for James’ at Woodland Opera House.’ We look forward to honoring these amazing individuals/theatres in our community.

Additionally, we are working on a new annual event (Fall 2022) to unite and celebrate this amazing community! We hope to see you soon!
