Elly Awards Judging FAQs

Q. Who are the Elly Judges? What is involved in being a judge?

A. Elly Judges are a dedicated group of volunteers who bring a variety of backgrounds and talents to the judging process. Many have theatrical backgrounds as directors, actors, designers, technicians or educators. Some come from other backgrounds. All possess a love of the performing arts and a commitment to be objective.

Judges devote their time and effort to one full season, July 1 through June 30. They commit to attending every show submitted in their category. The number of shows in each category varies year by year; a typical judge attends 15 to 45 shows at theaters in Sacramento and surrounding counties.

Judges may not be artistically involved in any production in the category they judge for the duration of their one-year commitment.

Judges' scores are tabulated by a Certified Public Accountant who is not affiliated with any theater. SARTA provides training, orientation, and materials.

Q. If I volunteer as a judge, in what category might I serve?

A. Elly Judges serve in one of the following categories: Comedy, Drama, Musicals, Education, Original Works, and Young People's Theater. SARTA attempts to place judges in the category for which they are most qualified and that they most prefer.
